Pre-operative Instructions
At Manchester Anaesthesia, your safety and comfort are our highest priority. To ensure a smooth procedure and best possible outcome, please follow these important pre-operative instructions carefully. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your consultant or our support team.
Before Your Surgery
Your anaesthetist and surgical team need to know about your overall health, medications, previous anaesthetics, and any relevant medical conditions in advance. This allows:
- You will be advised about the date, time, and location of your procedure.
- Please ensure you have arranged safe transport home, as you must not drive yourself after receiving anaesthesia or sedation.
- Inform your anaesthetist and surgical team about:
- Any medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or lung disease)
- Previous reactions to anaesthesia
- Any allergies (including latex & medication allergies)
- Any implants (pacemaker, cochlear implant, insulin pump, etc.)
Eating & Drinking Requirements
It is very important to follow fasting instructions to prevent complications under anaesthesia.
Unless otherwise advised:
- Do not eat solid food for 6 hours before your scheduled procedure time.
- You may drink small amounts of clear fluids up to 2 hours beforehand (water, black tea/coffee, clear apple juice).
- No milk, alcohol or fizzy drinks on the day of surgery.
Medications
- Continue taking your regular prescribed medication unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
- Blood thinners (such as Warfarin, Aspirin, or Clopidogrel) may need to be adjusted – follow your consultant’s advice.
- If you are diabetic, special instructions about insulin or tablets will be given.
- Bring a list of all medications you currently take, including herbal supplements.
What to Bring on the Day of Surgery
- Photo ID and any relevant medical documents
- List of medications and allergies
- Glasses/hearing aids if required
- A responsible adult escort for travel home
Clothing & Personal Items
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Remove all jewellery, body piercings, nail polish & false nails
- Do not wear makeup, perfume, or lotions on the day of surgery
- Contact lenses must be removed before your procedure (bring your case)
After Your Procedure
- You may feel tired, dizzy or nauseous for several hours after anaesthesia
- A responsible adult must stay with you for at least 24 hours
- Do not drive, operate machinery, sign legal documents or drink alcohol for 24 hours after anaesthesia
- Follow all post-operative care instructions given by your surgical team
